In this season of 10 too many covers of Christmas standards, leave it to Oklahoma's favorite fearless freaks, the Flaming Lips, to take on one of the most beloved holiday standards and give it that old Lips twist.
After teasing out images for the past week, the group finally dropped their super trippy take on "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy" on Thursday morning (Dec. 20).
Dressed in their finest bejeweled robes, green face paint, glittering wigs and crowns, the Lips add some twinkling harps, funky beats and to their arrangement, highlighted by singer Wayne Coyne's signature quavery vocals and guitarist Steven Drozd's robotic falsetto. The video and song were recorded at Coyne's Pink Floor Studios in Oklahoma City, with Coyne and George Salisbury directing the clip.
The band has also just announced that it will reprise its performance of beloved 1999 album The Soft Bulletin on Feb. 22 at Boettcher Concert Hall in Denver with accompaniment by the Colorado Symphony Orchestra.
